City Palace Jaipur

Home to the royal family, Jaipur City Palace is to Jaipur, what Taj Mahal is to Agra. If you go to Jaipur, then this is a place that you will most probably like to visit first. This huge palace was built during the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh and was a part of the first few buildings to be constructed in the city.

Initially, only the central part of the palace was built. Additional buildings were created by the successive rulers of the city. This palace is more like a huge complex with several gardens, buildings, planetariums and courtyards than just one structure.

Architecture

City Palace Jaipur provides an interesting mix of Rajasthani and Mughal Architecture. The complex has many different parts; most of which have been turned into museums and galleries. You will find beautiful carving and stone work on the walls and many entrance gates. This gives the palace a uniquely royal and formal feel.

Attractions

This historic complex has several different areas which you must visit:

  • Mubarak Mahal: Built in 19th century, this beautiful palace is a great example of Rajput, European and Islamic architecture. It has now been transformed into a museum, which exhibits personal collection of formal attire of King Sawai Madhosingh I.
  • Chandra Mahal: This seven story high structure is the most prominent part of the City Palace. The royal family of Jaipur resides in this building. But the ground floor is open for tourists and exhibits ancient carpets, artifacts, manuscripts etc. The gate of this palace is exquisitely decorated.
  • Diwan-E-Khas: This beautiful hall was used as private hall for the Kings. This marble floored hall exhibits two huge vessels which hold the Guinness World record of being the biggest vessels made of sterling silver.
  • Diwan-E-Aam: This hall was used to hold public meetings. Decorated with vibrant paintings on the ceiling, this chamber now exhibits ancient texts, paintings, shawls and carpets. The hall also exhibits royal throne of kings, known as Takth-E-Rawal.
  • Maharani palace: It used to be the residence of Queens. Today, this palace exhibits ancient royal weapons from 15th century. Don’t forget to check out the beautiful jewel encrusted ceiling frescos.
  • Govind Dev Ji temple: This Lord Krishna temple was built in 18th century. It is decorated with beautiful chandeliers, paintings and gold leaves. You can attend the daily prayers also, which are organized daily in the morning and evening.
