Nahargarh Fort

Overlooking the city of Jaipur, the Nahargarh Fort stands on the tip of the Aravalli Hills in the princely state of Rajasthan. The Nahargarh Fort was built by Maharaja Jai Sawai Singh in 1734. Along with Jaigarh Fort and Amber Fort, it offers a string defense ring for the city.

As the Nahargarh fort is situated just 6km north of Jaipur, the fort offers a very picturesque view of the city. This fort served as a refuge for Europeans in the Sepoy revolt of 1857, as they fled from the havoc created by mutineers in the neighboring states.

Architecture

Nahargarh means the abode of lions. The fort was mainly built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and was extended in 1968. However, according to legend, it was named after Prince Nahar. Legends also say that the spirit of the prince haunted the place and had obstructed the construction of the fort.

However, this legendary fort stands in ruins today, but still has some of the frescos from the yesteryears. The rooms in the fort were linked by various corridors where these frescos were painted. All the nine rooms in the fort for the nine queens of the Maharaja were well planned and decorated. This was also the hunting residence of the Mahrajas then. This fort was one of the first to be built by Maharaja Jai Sawai Singh and was mainly constructed to support the security of Amber.

Attraction

The fort is very famous for the picturesque view of Jaipur that it offers. However, there are several other legendary attractions too that tourists enjoy at the fort. It is said that the construction site of the fort used to be haunted by Prince Nahar and finally a tantric had to be called to exorcise the ghost who finally accepted to let the construction work proceed only if the fort was named after him.

Amongst the several buildings that are present in the fort, the Madhavendra Bhawan is the most appealing one. With its several interconnected rooms and colorful corridors and hallways, this building was built by Sawai Ram Singh II.

The view of the Man Sagar Lake from the fort is another major attraction at this place. Looking its best at night, this geometrically designed fort is a dazzling sight. There are several cafeterias situated outside the fort where he tourist can relax and enjoy fine drinks and snacks. The view of the fort in the backdrop of the city of Jaipur with the glittering lights at night is definitely a view that cannot be missed by any tourist. Even though the older constructions in the fort has been destroyed with time, the later extensions made to the fort are well preserved and still intact.

The Nahargarh fort is a symbol of the royal heritage of the ancient world and speaks volumes about its historic and majestic past. A visit to this fort is definitely recommended.
